Free Stargazing in Brisbane — Urban Observers


Join us for Urban Observers, a FREE monthly community sky watching event hosted by SEQAS, held in the scenic Barrett Street Park in Ridge Reserve off Jude Street. Weather permitting, it's your chance to explore the wonders of the night sky through telescopes, whether you're a first-time stargazer or an experienced telescope owner looking for expert tips and guidance.

Meet fellow enthusiasts, share your passion, and uncover fascinating celestial objects together! Our gatherings typically align with the First Quarter Moon, ensuring there's always the stunning half-moon to observe, even on cloudier nights. We also host special stargazing events throughout the year for extraordinary celestial occurrences like lunar eclipses or comet viewings. Public Astronomy Nights Brisbane


The purpose of the Urban Observing Outreach Program is to make amateur astronomy accessible to those who want to enjoy the wonders of the heavens in the comfort of their own city  and to maximize the observing experience despite the presence of light pollution. If you think a trip to the country is necessary to observe celestial objects, take a second look.

Viewing the sky from an urban location can be just as fun and educational -- if you know how to go about it.

Don't miss out, come be part of this exciting community adventure! And if one night a month isn't enough, join our Brisbane astronomy club — members get telescope hire, dark sky camps, workshops and a friendly community of stargazers year-round.

When:
One Saturday evening each month (dates align with the First Quarter Moon), from 5:00 PM till late — see upcoming dates below.

Cost:
Free. No booking needed — just turn up.

Bring:
A camp chair, warm layers, and a red-light torch if you have one. No telescope required — our members love sharing theirs.

Parking:
Free on-site — a SEQAS member opens the Jude Street gate for vehicle access to the observing field.

Weather:
Check our Facebook page from 4pm on the day for the go/no-go call.

Can You Stargaze in Brisbane? Absolutely — Here's How

You don't need to leave the city to enjoy the night sky. With the right approach, suburban Brisbane offers rewarding views all year round. Here's how our members make the most of urban skies:

1. Chase the bright stuff.
Light pollution washes out faint galaxies, but the Moon, planets, double stars and bright clusters punch straight through it. Saturn's rings and Jupiter's moons look just as spectacular from Bracken Ridge as they do from the outback — it's why our events are timed around the First Quarter Moon, when there's always a stunning target overhead.

2. Give your eyes 20 minutes.
Your night vision takes around 20 minutes to fully develop, and one glance at a phone screen resets it. Face away from streetlights, dim your phone, and use a red-light torch — you'll be amazed how much more appears.

3. Look straight up.
Objects high overhead shine through less atmosphere and less of the city's light dome than anything near the horizon. Plan your targets for when they're at their highest, and keep the glow of the CBD at your back.

4. Use the Moon to your advantage.
City observers often get better lunar views than dark-sky observers — a bright sky background actually tames the Moon's glare. Craters, mountain ranges and rilles along the terminator are endlessly fascinating, and they're Brisbane-proof.

F.A.Q.

Is Urban Observers really free? Yes — completely free, run by SEQAS volunteers. No booking or membership required.

Can I bring kids? Absolutely. Urban Observers is family-friendly and kids consistently get the biggest thrill from their first look at Saturn's rings or the craters of the Moon.

What will I see? Depending on the month: the Moon in spectacular detail, planets like Saturn and Jupiter, star clusters, nebulae and double stars — all visible even under Brisbane's city lights.

I own a telescope but don't know how to use it. Should I bring it? Yes, please do — helping people get their scopes working is one of our favourite things. Our members can assist with setup, alignment and collimation.
